Valparaíso is one of the most important ports in Chile. Every port city is distinct and Valparaíso (locally called “Valpo”) has a very unique flair!
Valparaíso was founded in the 16th century as a small settlement that grew rapidly in the beginning of the 18th century when the international trade was expanding. Unfortunately some of the magnificent buildings of these times are currently marked by dilapidation and deserted. This city that lies on the central coast still thrives from the ocean. When you turn your back to the ocean, you see that the city climbs into the hills. From almost anywhere you have a fantastic view of the harbor with huge vessels and the ocean that spans the horizon. Valparaíso, with its 300,000 inhabitants, is the fourth largest city in Chile and offers many cultural and architectural attractions. The special sites include any of the 15 vintage elevators that scale the hills to connect the city center with the surrounding neighborhoods. They are cheap and efficient to offer breathtaking views of the city and the ocean. Because of its historical center and the diversity of architecture, and uniqueness of the 44 hills, Valparaíso was declared a world cultural heritage site by UNESCO. Every year hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world visit this fabulous city. Housing in Chile not only offers a wide range of accommodations in Santiago, but also nice and cozy places to stay in Valparaiso. |
